Storage solutions provider EMC is making a surprise USD1.8bn all-cash bid for Data Domain, rivalling NetApp in the race to acquire the de-duplication company. EMC’s offer represents a 20% premium over NetApp’s.
Data Domain develops technology that recognises identical documents and deletes them in order to save space. Its products are used by AT&T and the US Department of Defense.
The acquisition of Data Domain would the biggest buyout in EMC’s history. The storage software and systems maker bought VMware for USD635m in 2003, an independently run unit now valued at USD12.6bn.
