Nokia plans to let US advertisers pay to put their brands on its phones starting later this year. Brands will be able to select an appropriate device, plant their logo on it and embed their own content.
Nokia tells AdAge the move is designed to supply content and branded devices to consumers who are so keen on a product they want to be seen advertising it.
The idea has seen some success in Brazil, but differing conditions in the two countries’ markets may make transplanting the scheme to the US difficult. US consumers pay much lower internet and content fees and most handsets are heavily subsidised by operators in return for securing long-term contracts.
The scheme is expected to launch sometime in the latter half of 2009.
