US book retailer Barnes & Noble is launching a free e-reader application for Research In Motion’s BlackBerry via its Fictionwise e-book unit.

The partnership was "prompted by consumer demand", according to Barnes & Noble president William Lynch, who says many of Fictionwise’s BlackBerry-owning customers requested an e-reader app. Blackberry owners can use the built-in browser to download the latest free e-book reader, giving them access to free e-books in addition to more than 60,000 Fictionwise titles online.

Consumers spent USD100m on e-books in 2008, according to print publisher Bertelsmann.
