LG Electronics plans to produce 50 mobile phones running Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system, with 10 handsets due out this year and another 16 to be released by 2012. LG and Microsoft are forming a joint R&D team to develop phones with tighter integration between software and handset.
LG will still produce phones running other operating systems. The company is planning two models that will run Google’s Android for 2009.
The first phone to be released by the partners will be the LG GM730 smartphone, which will come pre-loaded with Windows Mobile 6.1, upgradable to 6.5 later this year.
The announcement follows a technology collaboration deal between LG and Microsoft signed in November.
