Major mobile operators Telefonica, Verizon Wireless, Vodaphone, Orange, Japan’s NTT DoCoMo and South Korea’s SK Telecom will sell phones running software from wireless Linux foundation, LiMo, within the next year.
The joint announcement comes in the lead up to the Mobile World Congress trade show next week in Barcelona.
Nokia currently leads the mobile software market with Symbian, but is losing ground to Apple and Research In Motion. Linux has so far failed to make an impact on the mobile software market but has benefited from Google’s use of Linux to build its Android platform and the development of LiMo. The non-profit foundation offers its partners more say over software development than other developers, a tactic it hopes will eventually lead to more widespread use.
