Yahoo! is set launch internet services for TV sets, rolling out in the spring with the launch of a new line of flat-panel HDTV Samsung models.  Sony, LG Electronics and VIZIO are also due to release compatible sets.

Using widget-based technology, Yahoo! will allow viewers to access Yahoo! properties, such as Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Video and picture-hosting site, Flickr. In addition, a number of well-known content providers, including eBay, MySpace, CBS, The New York Times, Netflix and Amazon are also developing compatible 'TV Widgets'.

From this week, Yahoo! is also rolling out a Widget Development Kit which will allow third parties to develop TV-ready interactive content. Developers can do this using standard internet coding languages Javascript, XML and HTML.

The launch may bring Yahoo! a powerful new revenue stream, with users able to tailor interactive content suited to specific programmes.

"By creating this revolutionary new internet experience, and combining our technology with the global distribution of major consumer electronics partners, we enable consumers to access the relevant information and content to enhance their television watching experience," says the VP of Yahoo!'s Connected TV division, Patrick Barry.

Yahoo! unveiled the platform at the Consumer Electronics Show in Los Angeles, alongside Toshiba, which separately said it would use Yahoo! and Intel technology to launch internet-connected TVs by the end of the year.
