Book publisher Simon & Schuster will sell 5,000 e-book titles through Scribd, an online document-sharing service that has drawn criticism for making pirated texts available for download.
It is the first time a major New York publisher has made its titles available on Scribd. Spokesmen for both companies claim that Scribd has stepped up its anti-piracy measures and say that having authorised editions in the database will make illegal versions easier to track.
Unlike Amazon, Scribd allows content owners to keep 80% of the profits from online sales. Ellie Hirschhorn, EVP and chief digital officer for Simon & Schuster, says: "The benefit of the deal ? is twofold. We get to expand our distribution to Scribd's 60m users, plus we expect incremental revenue."
