Prime View International, which manufactures Amazon’s Kindle, is buying the company that produces the Kindle’s digital ink technology for USD215m. Prime View hopes the acquisition of E Ink will help it become the dominant player in the electronic ink industry. Prime View already owns Philip’s electronic paper division, purchased in 2005.
Prime View says the acquisition will help it develop colour displays for mass production by 2010. Prime View is E Ink’s biggest customer.
E Ink was founded in 1997 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The firm says it decided to accept Prime View’s offer due to the ?challenging? state of the US stock market. The two companies predict sales of e-book readers will hit 20m in 2012, generating USD3bn for the electronic ink industry.
