E.ON UK is partnering with Barratt Developments to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of a residential property development in east London. The Dalston Square development in Hackney will receive energy from a local, decentralised energy centre. The centre, which will be operated by E.ON, will generate heat and power from gas-fired CHP units and biomass boilers.
Residents of the development will receive electricity via the national grid, but all retail units will be supplied from the energy centre. The heating network will supply all residents and replace gas delivered by the national grid. The firms claim this will reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of the community by up to 25%.
The site is expected to earn an Eco-Home rating of ?excellent?, which is equal to level three in the code for sustainable homes.
"Decentralised energy centres, which generate community-based, low carbon energy from more sustainable sources, look set to play a major part in helping the UK keep energy prices affordable, carbon emissions down and the country's lights on,? says E.ON Energy Services MD, Don Leiper.
