O2 is to become the latest mobile operator to partner with Twitter to allow users to receive tweets via SMS, resurrecting a service that Twitter abandoned last year. O2 customers will be able to receive @replies and direct messages for free, under a 600-a-month fair usage limit.
Twitter decided to stop its SMS service in the UK last year after it revealed a single user could be costing the company up to USD1,000 a year. The new deal comes after Twitter’s new business development director Kevin Thau met European mobile operators earlier this year. Vodafone has already reinstated the service, with Orange, T-Mobile and 3 also expected to produce their own Twitter services.
