A consortium led by BASF Future Business (BASF FB) is receiving EUR21m (USD27.8m) from the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to develop lithium-ion batteries for use in plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles. The HE-Lion consortium consists of 18 members, including Freudenberg Viliesstoffe, SGL Carbon, Fraunhofer Institute Itzehoe, Gaia, Bosch and a number of German universities.
The partners will match the BMBF’s contribution, and aim to develop and commercialise the batteries over the next four to six years. BASF is aiming to develop a battery with between two and five times the energy density of current lithium-ion batteries.
HE-Lion plans to test the technology in a Volkswagen Golf. ?By today's standards, a lithium ion battery for a Golf would be as expensive as the vehicle itself? says BASF FB MD, Dr Thomas Weber. ?Modern production processes are needed to assure high quality and environmentally friendly manufacture and to significantly reduce costs. To achieve these goals, materials research experts are needed as much as system developers.?
