Vodafone and Hutchison Whampoa are merging their Australian telecoms operations in a move which will help the third and fourth largest providers in terms of market share make up ground lost to market leader Telstra and second-placed Singapore Telecommunications.

The equal joint venture between Vodafone's Australian unit, Vodafone Australia, and Hutchison 3G Australia will be named VHA.

VHA will appoint Nick Read, current CEO of Vodafone Asia-Pacific and Middle East region, as its chairman. CEO of 3 Australia, Nigel Dews, will stay on as CEO of the new company.

VHA will have around 6m customers, 2m from Hutchison and 4m from Vodafone, and annual revenue in excess of USD2.6bn.
