Mobile operator Vodafone is partnering with US software firm Azingo to develop Linux-based applications. This deal shows Vodafone is still keen on maintaining Linux operating system LiMo as a key platform.
Nokia's Symbian operating system is currently the market leader in terms of handset software, but it has lost market share to Research In Motion, Apple, and Microsoft's Windows Mobile over the last year. Linux has not had much success in the field so far, but it is on the rise due to LiMo platform and Google's incorporation of Linux into its Android system.
Azingo CEO Mahesh Veerina claims that "Linux, including Android, will reach 500m phone volume (units) in five years."
This will still be a small proportion of the total handsets sold in that period, expected to total 5bn mobile phones.
