Italian utility Enel and Sharp, the world’s second largest manufacturer of solar cells, plan to invest JPY100bn (USD1.05bn) in building 189MW of solar farms in Italy by 2012. The firms are also planning a joint venture with an unnamed third party to invest up to JPY150bn (USD1.58bn) in a factory to make thin-film solar cells. The factory will have an initial production capacity of 480MW, rising to 1GW once it is complete.

Enel is involved in a number of renewable energy projects. Last month it signed an agreement with fellow Italian energy firm Eni to jointly develop the country’s first carbon capture and storage facility. The firm also operates wind farms and hydroelectric power stations.
