Sky has signed a mobile TV deal with UK operator 3. The agreement adds to similar deals with Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile and leaves O2 as the only major UK operator not to distribute Sky TV content.
Through the deal, 3 subscribers will be able to receive up to 27 Sky Mobile channels, including Sky Sports, Sky News and CNN. The Sky TV Mobile package costs GBP5 per month or GBP1 per-day for one-off users.
The TV service will be promoted by 3's entertainment portal Planet 3 but will not be hosted through this. Sky will instead host the services via third-party firm Vidiator. As such, viewers will be required to pay an extra GBP2.50 per-month to 3 in order to gain the 10Mb of data transfer needed to run the service.
"We are excited to launch some of Sky’s most popular live mobile TV channels on 3 UK," says BSkyB's general manager of mobile, David Gibbs. "As we've seen since launching Sky Mobile TV in 2005, month after month Sky content continues to top the mobile channel rankings."
Sky first partnered with 3 in 2004 to provide users with Sky Sports News bulletins and highlights of Premier and Champions League football.
