IBM is buying virtualisation specialist Transitive for an undisclosed sum. Transitive develops cross-platform virtualisation technology and holds 48 global patents. The firm's technology is designed to allow applications to run on multiple operating systems and microprocessors with minimal modification.

The acquisition builds on an existing partnership which has seen IBM use Transitive's technology to let customers avail of Linux-based applications on IBM systems. Founded in 2000, Transitive has offices in California and the UK. The company is privately held, with funding participation by Pond Venture Partners, Manchester Technology Fund, Crescendo Ventures, Accel Partners and Meritech Capital Partners.
