Amazon is partnering with One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), a non-profit organisation, to sell child-friendly laptops and promote education in developing countries. Every shopper who pays USD400 for an OLPC notebook on Amazon will automatically donate a second laptop to a child in the Third World.

OLPC laptops, called XO, are designed to work outdoor and use less power than standard computers. Nearly of them use open-source software, with a Windows version expected for next year. A similar OLPC initiative last year resulted in more than 80,000 Thirld World children receiving XOs. The Notebooks cost USD188 each last year but the firm has since raised the price to USD199 citing rising costs. However, it aims to reduce the price to USD100 over time.
