Search engine giant Google is joined the Demand Response and Smart Grid Coalition (DRSG), an industry group working to promote smart grid technology. Energy management firms CPower, Conservation Services Group and Corporate Systems Engineering are also joining the coalition.
Smart metering firms Comverge, Eka Systems, eMeter, EnerNOC, Itron, Landis+Gyr, SmartSynch and Silver Spring Networks are all members of the DRSG. Software giant IBM is also part of the group.
The DRSG was founded in 2001 as the Demand Response and Advanced Metering Coalition (DRAM), but changed its name to reflect the development of smart grid technologies, which are more sophisticated than utility metering. As well as providing tools for utilities and consumers to monitor energy use, the DRSG’s members hope to increase efficiency on the grid.
In September, Google formed an alliance with General Electric to support the cleantech industry, stating that a key priority was integrating smart grid technology in the US transmission system. Cutting energy use with smart grid technology is also a crucial element of Google’ Clean Energy 2030 plan, released last month.
