>> With the economy in its current state and layoffs affecting industries across the board I am constantly wondering if I might be the next to go. So how do I avoid feeling so glum about my career and overcome all of the negative thoughts?

>> What you want to do first is acknowledge that things are tough. This is a hard place right now and it is difficult, perhaps the most difficult thing you may ever have to do and then give yourself an opportunity to take a fresh perspective because what you want to do is think about what can you do? You may not be able to change the economy but you may be able to and you can change your corner of the world. So prepare, is your resume a point to click away from hitting send, research job opportunities, cast a wide net, connect with your contacts, become a networking machine and remember it's about what you can do not what you can't do. In the words of Henry Ford whether you think you can or you can't you're right. Find someone to support you and hold you accountable to your agenda, define your circle of influence and review, renew, recharge and recreate. Review what you've done and what more you might want to do. Renew that commitment to yourself. Recharge your batteries and recreate yourself.

>> Those are great strategies for overcoming my own negative thoughts but how do I avoid getting caught up in the negativity of others when it's all around me?

>> Sometimes it's as simple as getting up and walking away. Remove yourself politely from that conversation that's distracting you if it's the news, shut it off, stop reading it. What you want to do is give yourself the opportunity to stay in a place where you can be resilient.

>> If I do have to get up and walk away how do I maintain my optimism without seeming insensitive to others?

>> Acknowledge everyone. Acknowledge that you're in this as well as they are. You're all in this together. This is hard for everyone and also let them know that you're making a conscious choice about how you want to navigate this situation and you're choosing to look at it from the place of what can I do and perhaps this will inspire them as well.

>> In summary.

>> Acknowledge that this is hard and you have a choice. You can change your corner of the world. Be prepared. Research, network, define your circle of influence, get support, review, renew, recharge, recreate and finish this sentence. I have what it takes too to be resilient, to be on purpose and to maintain positive momentum.
