>>With so much attention focused on the mistakes of big businesses made in the past year, you'd think everyone would know what leadership missteps to avoid. That doesn't seem to be the case so come on managers let's talk about leadership don'ts.

>>It shouldn't be a surprise that today's leaders face increasing scrutiny. Besides knowing what to do you also need to be familiar with what not to do. Here are three mistakes to avoid. Number one, don't raise you voice. You may think increasing the volume of your words indicates passion or excitement but that's not how others see it. A loud voice is associated with aggression and anger. Leaders who raise their voices in the hope of expressing authority and confidence, foster cultures of blind submission. We're not in the management dark ages. Number two, don't ignore complaints. As unemployment numbers increase so do employee grievances. Last year discrimination claims in the U.S. rose fifteen percent. Employees feel a loss of control as their peers lose jobs, their own salaries are cut and management just doesn't seem to listen. An employee who grumbled to you last week and may have had a valid reason to do so might file a formal complaint next week. Number three, don't openly criticize people or put them down. In grammar school this behavior was called, doesn't play well with others. If you've never learned how to communicate based on facts rather than emotions, it's time to go back to school. Visibly and vocally displaying displeasure or annoyance by rolling your eyes, using inappropriate language or uninhibited venting about team members are not displays of leadership. And guess what, the person on the phone during the conference call may not be able to see you playing the violin as he speaks, but he's going to hear about it, about five minutes after the call ends. So what should you do more of? Start talking. Share honest genuine thoughts that do at least two things. Acknowledge the mood of the team and tell them how you will help them accomplish their goals. Show appreciation for what is done well and guide the team through difficult patches. That's what true leaders do.
