Do you wish to could figure out what makes each of your employees tick? What motivates them to come to work and do a great job? If you think motivating employees involves going bowling or down to the local pub, you ve got some work to do. Come on managers, it s time to learn how to motivate employees.

Self motivation can come from the head or the heart. As a manager it s not something you can buy, give, or train in someone. It s not tangible. And because it s intangible, managers often don t know how to approach motivation. They don t know where to begin. Here are 3 ways to begin creating an environment for motivation to develop.

Tip 1: Appeal to an Employee s Strengths or Passions.

To appeal to the intangible, to someone s head or heart, you first have to figure out what he loves to do or is great at. Simply ask the employee about his passions and strengths or use the StrengthsFinder.com tool.

Tip 2: Connect Strengths to the Big Picture.

Employees will be motivated when you, as their manager, connect what they love or what they do best to the company s big picture. Make the intangible tangible for them. For example, if an employee thrives on structure, help him see how what he does contributes to the goals of the team.

Tip 3: Create a Picture for the Employee.

Finish connecting dots for the employee by visually describing what it will be like when he uses a strength at work. Tell him how he would do it. For example, Jeff, I see you using your passion for structure by creating a process to improve how we submit monthly accounts. This will impact many employees, including those in HR and Marketing and it will eliminate redundancies by 25%.

Remember that motivation occurs when you create an environment in which people are motivated to do their best. It takes time for managers, especially new ones or those with new team members, to do this. The time you spend now is an investment, but it s worth it. When you create an environment that encourages motivation, you will foster dedication and loyalty in your entire team.
