"Italian Cashflow" may not sound like a sure bet on the share market, but a Victorian university student with the dubious moniker managed to double his money in a share market game run by the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).

Carlo Lancelotti, who called his syndicate "Italian Cashflow", was the national winner of the ASX Public Sharemarket Game 1 2009, after he turned a theoretical $50,000 into $104,454.21 in just 15 weeks.

Mr Lancelotti said his plan was to hold his nerve and hold on to his stocks until the last minute.

"I entered the game with a simple and straightforward strategy," Mr Lancelotti said.

"Part of this strategy was that once the stocks were purchased they were not to be traded but held till the end of the game, rather than trading in and out of the market.

"I decided to be patient and wait for the market to hit its bottom ... it paid off."

His nous as an investor saw him win $1,000 in cash plus a $5,000 Westpac broking account.

Mr Lancelotti came second in the competition in 2008, as a year 12 student in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game.
