Fairfax is merging the Canberra bureaux of its two major newspapers - The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age - but says no jobs will be lost.
Fairfax chief executive and publisher Lloyd Whish-Wilson told staff of the "important changes" in a memo on Monday, saying it would strengthen and broaden national coverage.
Reporters currently working separately for the Sydney and Melbourne newspapers will now form one team providing stories for both mastheads.
The changes at Fairfax's Canberra bureau, based at Parliament House's press gallery, would maintain current staffing levels, the memo said.
"The (newspapers) will each have a core staff of four reporters working exclusively for their respective masthead," Mr Whish-Wilson said.
"These positions include political editor, political correspondent and sketch writer. This enables the mastheads to maintain a distinct political voice and continues to provide a diversity of opinion and commentary."
Stories written by the masthead-specific reporters will be published by all Fairfax online sites.
A remaining pool of some 12 reporters will work as a team providing copy for the SMH and The Age.
The new structure will take effect from Monday, June 22.
