Official Team Standings (by Financial Metrics)

Does the NFL run a solid business? Only one team in the league — the Detroit Lions — lost money last season. Three franchises dominate as perennial financial champs in Forbes' annual rankings of the most valuable teams: the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Redskins, and the New England Patriots. In years to come, the Cowboys will likely stay on top with a new billion-dollar stadium expected to boost earnings, but top-grade management at the Patriots and formidable revenue from the Redskins will keep competition tight. Click through the sortable chart below for a glimpse into the finances of all 32 NFL teams.

Sheesh... the Detroit Lions operating income is only slightly worse than their win-loss record this season.

The "business" of the NFL has some serious consequences that are more important than the bottom line. The true cost of the "business" that isn't fairly accounted for; permanently injured players. The labor practices of the NFL, leveraging an anti-trust exemption from congress, hardly qualify as ethical. Before we all start to kiss the superbowl rings of these billionaire playboys, someone ought to take a look at the injury rate of NFL employees (100%) and the resulting financial problems that result from permanent disability claims that are adjucated under a corrupt arbitration system. If a business is about more than just money, then the NFL has a long way to go before it deserves praise as a place to work.

The Green Bay model of being community owned is what's kept the smallest market in the league competitive as a business -- that, combined with the Lambeau Field upgrade -- are the reasons the Packers did well in the rankings listed above. Come visit -- it's beautiful!
