Five Ways to Speak Like Obama

Tags: Body Language, Attention, Audience, Obama, Calmness, Barack Obama, Public Speaking, Leadership, Presentations, Speech Writing, Speech Giving, Sims Wyeth

Now that we’ve got your attention, you should realize, of course, that you don’t want to speak like Barack Obama. You want to speak like you. Nevertheless, as a student of the art of public speaking, you can — and should — observe Obama’s oratorical skills. The greats all learn from other greats, so don’t hesitate. Study Obama’s repertoire, take what you like, and use what you can to improve your own public speaking.

Obama is a master at grabbing and keeping his audience’s attention, which is the number one goal of any public speaker. How does he do it? Here are five key lessons from Obama’s rhetorical playbook.

1. Talk About the Audience’s Concerns

Notice that when Obama addressed a joint session of Congress for the first time, he told our story before he told his own. He talked about our sleepless nights, for example, and the college admission that might have to be turned down because of a lack of financing.

This was brilliant, and you can do it, too. Start your talk by broadly defining the situation that your listeners face. Then, once you’ve got them nodding their heads in agreement, move on to describe the problems or challenges that are on their minds. Start where the audience is, not where you are. Once you have their attention, you can lead your listeners wherever you want to take them.

2. Keep It Simple

Throughout the presidential campaign, Obama kept his main message — “change you can believe in” — simple and easy to remember. Sure, some pundits mocked its simplicity, but it served its purpose perfectly as the banner at the front of his parade. You, too, can keep it simple, even if you have mountains of research to report.

First, fine-tune your core message. Fierce debate within Obama’s campaign no doubt accompanied the birth of the slogan “change you can believe in,” and similar prolonged discussion may accompany the discovery of your own core message. But once the decision has been made, don’t let that debate show. Chisel away at your topic until you can reduce your presentation to a core message. Once you achieve this, all your complex ideas can march behind it.

This is as true for business presentations as it is for political campaigns. Granted, your content may be nuanced and detailed, but so were Obama’s policy positions. He used his simple slogan to make us believe he was the politician for change — something so many Americans longed for — and he appealed to us to have faith (to believe) in the change he was offering us. Obama won people through a simple slogan, which then allowed him to more easily serve up his ideas about meaty topics such as health care, terrorism, and the crumbling economy.

We make a serious error if we mistake a complete argument for a persuasive one. All audiences, no matter how sophisticated, have limited attention spans and a limited ability to retain detailed spoken information. Don’t fear that you’re leaving details out; you must be selective. After all, what good is a thorough and detailed argument if it is inaccessible?

3. Anticipate What Your Audience Is Thinking

Obama and his speechwriters are certainly aware of the great line by Goethe, “Every word that is uttered evokes the idea of its opposite.” What this means is that when you express one view, the odds are high that people will reflexively think about other, unmentioned aspects of the topic.

A presentation that does not deal with this “evoking of opposites” loses the audience’s attention because it fails to address the questions and concerns that come up in people’s minds. So anticipate it. Show your audience that you understand the contrary view better than they do, and explain why your proposal or argument is still superior.

Obama did this effectively in his speech on race, in which he attempted to distance himself from the inflammatory Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Obama pointed out, for example, that he won primaries in former Confederate states and that he had built a “powerful coalition of African Americans and white Americans.” But he also acknowledged what was undoubtedly on people’s minds when he said, “This is not to say that race has not been an issue in the campaign.” He went on to say that, yes, Reverend Wright’s sermons were controversial, but, no, that’s not why he must be rebuked. He said that, yes, the clips of Reverend Wright on YouTube make him look terrible, but, no, that’s not the full measure of the man.

His speech was powerful and widely praised. It was effective in part because Obama let everyone know that he had thought a lot about race, and in particular about both sides of the controversy surrounding his former pastor.

Attack your topics this way, too, and you will be in charge of the conversation. This approach will not only grab and hold the attention of your listeners, but it will also help you win people into your camp, which is what you need to do if, say, your goal is to persuade your board of directors of the wisdom of a seemingly risky partnership.

4. Learn to Pause

Obama has mastered the art of pausing. Just check out his presidential acceptance speech in Chicago to see this skill at work. He pauses to let us catch up with him. He pauses to let his words resonate. He pauses, in a sense, to let us rest. Pauses also give the impression of composure and thoughtfulness.

Here’s an exercise to help you learn to pause.

  • Mark up your paragraphs / in this manner / into the shortest possible phrases. / First, / whisper it, / breathing / at all the breath marks. / Then, / speak it / in the same way. / Do this / with a different paragraph / every day.

Here’s what the opening paragraph of Obama’s remarks would look like:

  • “If there is anyone out there / who still doubts / that America is a place / where all things are possible, / who still wonders / if the dream of our founders / is alive in our time, / who still questions / the power of our democracy, / tonight / is your answer.”

Where you pause is up to you; there are no hard and fast rules. But try it. Slowly inhale to the count of three at each breath mark. Speak as though you had plenty of time. The goal / of this exercise / is to teach your body / to slow down.

5. Master the Body Language of Leadership

Obama’s body language is relaxed and fluid. It does not display tension or fear. He’s calm and assertive — which is exactly what you need to be to get people to comply with your requests. For the ultimate in Obama smoothness, watch his entrance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

To achieve the body language that’s effective for you, focus on a single attribute — for example, calm — and practice implementing it in the basic motions of your day, from getting dressed in the morning, to leaving your home for work, to greeting your friends and colleagues. Research in the Scientific American suggests that focusing on one word is the most effective way to learn a new behavior. It will probably feel forced at first, but don’t worry. It will soon become natural, and eventually your body language will communicate the right mix of calm and assertiveness.

Finally, you’ll need to rehearse. Practice calmly walking up to the lectern or the front of the room. Arrange your papers calmly. Look out to the audience with a sense of command, with assertiveness. Let the silence hang for a moment, and only then deliver your opening remarks.

Calmness begets a sense of authority. Behave as if you are in control, and you will in fact gain control and command attention.

Yes, that was a catchy title. Sneaky! But thanks for breaking the process down so succinctly. I have long admired those who have mastered the craft of effective communication so I have elected to hone my skills by seeking speaking opportunities. Nervously excited. Thanks again.

This is a great, succinct article that many can use. I'm often asked how to speak in front of large audiences with ease and this list is a great place to start.

And, while it mentions "practice," I suggest a stronger directive:
Number 7: Speak often. The more that people take the opportunity to speak with/to crowds, the more opportunities they will have to practice.

Number 8: Accept constructive criticism. As I started as a stand-up trainer, the feedback provides opportunities for people to share their perspective on the speaker's ability.

Yes, please remember to show respect to our President. Please do not refer to him by his last name with including President.

He is confident and eloquent. Much of this is attribute to his height and gait. He always looks confident, calm, and very collected. I campaigned for him, and I have no regrets about doing so.

Wishing him many more successful speeches!

    Craziness

You BNET folks have gone off the deep end. Seriously.

So in other words, your great 'business' advice is to trick people? That's what I got out of it.

Call me crazy, but I don't believe that tricking people and talking yourself into believing that they're mindless twits that jump at shiny objects is the right way to do business.

Also, I don't like to take business advice from a person who has never had so much as a dishwashing job, let alone managed a business. If you want to get a bunch of lemmings to do your bidding with slick, cunning style and carefully-placed pauses, then I suppose this column would help you tremendously.

RE: Five Ways to Speak Like Obama

Wow, I am surprised at the analysis. Aside from the fact that your points are key entries in many public speaking textbooks, seminars and forums, your examples do not appear accurate. It might be better if you used someone different for your example. Politics aside, our President doesn't exemplify several of your key points. He does not understand the concerns of his audience unless it is a speech to a supporter group. He does not either like or take criticism well publically, and demeans those that do criticize. As well, he does not think like the audience unless, as above, it is to a supporter group. He only keeps it simple because he has to. He does not have a grasp of may of the key issues and hence simple is more for his benefit than the audience. This is key since many of the 'answers' and responses to questions do not hit the point nor offer the questioner resolve. I agree on the pausing. He is very effective here. I have interpretted the 'body language of leadership' as arrogance. I am pretty tired of the "...let me make myself clear..." or "... you have to understand...", as if I don't, and I need a lecture. That is not either understanding your audience OR leadership. Finally, if it were not for teleprompters, it would not be possible for him to speak as eloquently as you have described. If you listen to him speak impromptu, he is not very impressive.
Your analysis was disappointing at best.

RE: Five Ways to Speak Like Obama

It seems to me that the thrust of this article is how to be a better orator. The politics of the example, President Obama, were not mentioned nor are they relevant.
The great leader of Britain in WW2, Winston Churchill, was a man with many failings, but he was a truely effective leader and undoubtedly helped in his leadership by those same 5 attributes of effective and compelling oratory mentioned in the article.
Forget the politics. If a leader from industry who was also a compelling public speaker were cited as the example the argument would be equally as valid. President Obama has been referred to i imagine because his speeches are frequently heard and his style recognisable.

There seem to be two strains of thought in these comments, neither of them very helpful in my view. One is dismissive, based on dislike for the President; the other is defensive, focused on the tone of the dismissals. Whatever ones point of view on the substance, it seems to me useful to attempt to understand how the President is delivering his message, whether it effectively communicated and why or why or why not.

RE: Five Ways to Speak Like Obama

While I agree with all the writer's points about Obama's speaking style, it goes way beyond the 5 alluded to.

Speaking is no different than selling. To be a great speaker, you must know how to sell your message in a way that your audience "buys" the message.

85% of all sales is driven by the unconscious mind ... NOT the conscious mind (which is our logic, analysis, etc. side of the brain. This has been demonstrated via neuroscience and other such disciplines.

To sell your message at the unconscious level (which is why Obama became President) involves hitting your audience at a deep emotional level.

What Obama was a master at was telling stories and using metaphors. Both speak directly to the unconscious level and bypasses conscious, logical resistance. Martin Luther King, Jr. was also a master at metaphors (if you ever listened to his "I Have a Dream" speech

He was also a master at techniques I have used with sales teams ... called "positive emotional anchoring." If you look at his acceptance speech after every emotional story, he anchored with the mantra "Yes, We Can!"

So every time he says that mantra (or any of his followers), he/they would stir up the same powerful emotions and amplify it.

He knew how to use visual imagery and the imagination as another way to bypass conscious resistance. He utilized much repetition of key phrases which puts people in a light trance. He knew how to embed double meaning words and phrases, as well as a process we call "pacing and leading." And the list goes on.

Whether he was trained in these skills and techniques, I have no idea. The fact that he went from an unknown Jr. senator whom nobody thought he even had a chance to becoming Pres. has much to do with the use of the above techniques.

And it's also why McCain or Clinton didn't stand a chance even though more experience because they attempted to speak to the audience's logical conscious brain and that is not where "buying decisions" (even buying a candidate or message) are made.

I appreciate the author's perception regarding President Obama's speech mannerisms. I know many oppose his politico-economic ideology, as do I; but to analyze closely the means he employs that are convincing to certain audiences, is a great feat. Former President Clinton had his mannerisms, but his was more like the manipulative style I've seen in experienced felons. Both Presidents Obama and Clinton are educated attorneys; but both could have been successful car salesmen had they not chosen to be politicians.

With all due respect I tend to disagree with Mr. Wyeth point
of view. I do not believe that President Obama prepares his
speeches. He tends to make adequate speeches when he is
reading the teleprompter. He appears smooth and his
sentences are coherent and well thought out. It is disturbing
to listen to him when he is in his own, the number of Ahs,
hums and ands get in the way for proper understanding. If
he was to speak to a group of Toastmasters he would be
embarrassed to hear what the evaluator has to say but it
also would be a good lesson on proper speaking. The only
person that is worse than the President is his Press
Secretary he is the champion of Ahs. Look for those simple
details next time you listen to them and you will see that is
little to learn from them. What a shame that a man of such
intelligence have not been coached on simple rules of public
    speaking.

Obama / the President of the United States of America /(2009 - ) / was a genius / during the campaign. He and his staff knew / what it took to get the numbers / and / where to concentrate their / efforts / and / he got elected.
He is / however / not a great speaker / um / erm / (teleprompter glitch) / Change, uh / you and I / I mean / each of us / uhm / as in we / can put our trust in / (Teleprompter reboots) / and he, Obama / shines when he has / a polished speech flowing / on the dual screens / in front of him.

If McCain had of picked Obama's teleprompter as a running mate, he would have won hands down!!! Hell, if Teleprompter had of run on an independent ticket we would have a true leader now!!!

    This is a good analysis.
But I doubt the fact that one having all those attributes will perform ( to get results) as the president Obama does.
Those attributes seem very natural to him, coming from deep within him. That is why I think the results cannot easily be emulated as one would be successful in emulating the attributes.
I think the secret is " inside- out" not the "outside-in"

I am a poor public speaker, I get frightened mid speech.
So I really appreciate Sims' advice.
Especially so after listening to someone speaking for over an hour yesterday evening, doing the exact opposite of what Sims advises.
The speaker, was a 'gabbler' who had something to say and needed 500 words a minute to say it, repeated herself often and seemed to be terrified that if she drew breath then she would be interrupted.
The net result - I can hardly remember a word she said, even though her speech was important to me and my business.
By the end of the first quarter hour I just cut out her words and vigourous body language and focussed on the excellent slides she had prepared. I extracted my own message from them.
I believe I got her message, but it was by default.
So thanks Sims. I will try to practice your advice.

RE: Five Ways to Speak Like Obama

The article brings to the fore the basics of public speaking. It is not the alpha and omega of public speaking however, if you need to develop your communication skills there are many specialist forums for that. I am writing from Nairobi Kenya, a place where we have a natural admiration for the President of the US and I am a toastmaster as well so it amazes me when I read some of the posts that are aimed at discrediting the President and not helping those of us who wish to excel in communication. Please learn to use the right channels to air your grievances and be polite to other people.

The reason why Mr Obama made such speech is in marketing research. Politics is marketing - if you give people what they want and make them delighted, you will sound like Mr Obama.
I am really sorry for Americans that consider Mr Obama as Marxist or communist. For the first time in more then decades you have a leader who is on the right way to change the way we "from the rest of the world" look at America. You guys made a lot of mistakes around the world, that is why you have enemies.
    Mr Obama - best wishes.

I am a university professor so for me it is essential to have presentation skills. I do admire Obama and I believe that big part of his win could be attributed to his way of talking and holding speeches.
I would like to point out that sometimes you need a touch of aggressiveness when holding a speech to get a strong point across.
I agree with everything written in the article, we need more of those articles.

anticipate what your audience is thinking: Did you anticipate

An idea for a next article would be: How to assure your

I really don't understand why you Obama bashers come here and ruin a perfectly good article with your BS. If President Obama's name wouldn't have been mentioned, would you still take the chance to troll here? Get a life!

As for the article, I think it makes sense and I am going to use the tips. However, I think it my be something to point out that the pausing is usually done with very large crowds. Like in a stadium. Most of the time the pausing is done so the sound from the PA system can settle and your next words are clearer. There are also the pauses for applaus. President Obama doesn't talk with those long pauses, when he does a press conference for example. If he does use pauses, they are shorter then.

Leave them wanting more. I had to address up to 250 Realtors once a month. Every month, I came up with a character, theme, a skit with audience participation, and kept it to 10-15 minutes.

For example, St. Patty's Day theme....I was an old and busted leprechaun that could not find gold (sitting on my arse and watching tv)....my young son (13) was killing it. He grabbed a few agents and found gold all over the room and in turn got me excited and I grabbed an agent and found a big stash. Point made, we all get lazy and blame things outside of our lack of activity and enthusiasm.

Putting effort into the costumes and writing a script is highly appreciated when you have a long line of "Use our product because (there's nothing in it for the audience and it goes so long with details no one cares about) I want to make money and hear myself talk."

I am not overly fond of President Obama's style. Perhaps it is more of the messages than the skill.

One key issue that drives me crazy is the constant pausing.

    Pause... Pause... Pause...

While I agree that pausing works well, I sometime find his constant pausing to be irritating. Too much pausing is just as bad as never taking a breath. Just say it already.

Also, his style is very preachy and he is always yelling at me and not speaking.

Good piece on effective oral/presentation communications. It's revealing to peer into the very small minds of certain commenters to see the narrow, closed and smug world-view they hold so dear. But since small minds consist of a great deal of empty space, it doesn't take long to see what's inside.

Wow, it's the election all over again!

Funny, the supporters say it's all about how he speaks. Which is of course what the article is about. But as many have pointed out that is sort of the whole problem; just because it's slick, looks good, and sounds pleasant doesn't mean it is good or truthful. How many can attest to this from corporate meeting speeches they've heard? Intellectual giant? To put it in his words - Uh, um right. It does show his ability to fool an audience in the fact that many of his ideas have been proven not to work over and over again throughout history but many still go along. And a sure sign of the kool-aid around the lips is the old stand-by - "if you disagree then you must be a racist!" I thought the left was dead set against mixing politics and religion; so you better lose the messiah label.

    Interesting piece,
The point of writing is to get response.
    You pulled it off!
We have three kinds of posters here--because the 'messenger' here, is unattached from your point. Fully 55 million Americans did not vote for him. And loads of B.O. voters are wanting to change their vote. Too late. A country gets only the leadership (or lack thereof) they deserve. What did you expect?
This is to people in the US--

The next time President Obama speaks (or his teleprompter tells him to) count how many times he references HIMSELF--rather than America--because for THIS President
IT IS ALL ABOUT HIM--AND how well HE is loved by the other leaders in the world--NOT about what is best for the country.

"But listen to what he says..." But I ask you to REASON...
Remember the adage your mother may have taught you:
"Your actions speak so loudly, I cannot hear a word you are saying!"

Toastmasters is an order...it takes more than wit and an appeal to emotion to be a great speaker. Conversely, a great leader 'walks the talk' (without talking too much, of course). When one allows perception to shape their views, you're left with a chameleon...everchanging and unstable.

Great article. People need to put aside their personal views on politics and realize that this is an article on delivering a message. Like him or not, believe in his policies or don?t, agree with his speeches or choose not to, it doesn?t diminish President Obama's ability to deliver effective speeches to an incredibly diverse audience.

As for him needing a teleprompter; every leader in business, politics, education, science, and every other profession uses some type of notes while delivering a speech to a mass audience. I would imagine most of you would want to as well if you had to speak to all of the world. It's foolish not to and it is another tool used to effectively maintain eye contact and deliver a message that is too long to memorize. Whether the message is accurate true or right is beside the point of this article.

Even the third challenge would be to act in a culturally sensitive manner here in the US. So I appreciate any advice I can get on how to improve upon my language skills in speaking. I think these tips were generally very useful and if by adding Obama to the title of the article, more people clicked and read it - then GREAT! Mission Accomplished!

Unfortunately, some readers, were annoyed with the political connection so maybe they need to get over it and put it in perspective. While it may be true that Obama's delivery of prepared speeches are MUCH better than his impromptu delivery - (which is often filled with uhm, and uh), at least he is a STARK improvement over our previous President. I am certain that Bush will never be offered as an example of a great communicator. Although I believe that Jeb Bush is rather articulate. These are not partisan political observation, just observable facts.

My advice is "Don't let politics cloud your ability to partake in an opportunity to learn a new skill".

Anymore, I don't even try to watch his idiotic attempt to remember what he is suppose to say with or without the prompter, and his stuttering is so irritating who want's to listen. I don't think I have ever seen this many responses for ANY BNET piece before. I think the title is correct, the author did break down the ways Prez Obama speaks when speaking to large crowds. But not all of these "ways" may be suitable for speaking to co-workers, giving reports to superiors, or working in small workgroups to develop a plan.
The Obama-style is suitable for large rallies where people can't hear well due to the noise of the crowd congratulating themselves for creating a "change" in America (whatever that means).
You cannot be an effective speaker if the audience feels they are being lectured, told how to think, made to feel inferior to your lofty ideals, and have an arrogance in your body language, but no power in your verbage.
I would love to see the author do a similar report on President Ronald Reagan's speaking methods. Now, he was a great orator that ALL people wanted to listen to from all walks of life and he motivated everyone to aspire to greatness.

Okay, so the points here come from other sources. The truth is that many politicians on both sides of the aisle have taken lessons from oration coaches. I know as I had the privilege of taking such lessons from one such coach who did coach both sides.

The point here is, whether or not you ascribe to his politics, President Obama is an effective speaker. (Twenty years ago this same article could probably have been written using another, Republican, president.) And here he is being used as a way to illustrate common points that, if followed, could make anyone a more effective speaker.

Speaking is not about "fooling" anyone, it is about getting your points across in a way that people can understand so that they can decide whether or not they agree. Our previous president may have had some great ideas but too often people missed them because they were distracted by the fact that he was NOT a great speaker.

Thank you BNET for giving us an article that may help some people improve their public speaking so we can listen to their ideas and not be distracted by their delivery.

I do not think he is an effective speaker at all, especially without his teleprompter. To me he is appearing to be speaking down to his audiance as though he has the magical secret solution for every political or business problem that exist today. Unlike a great leader who would use his speeches to rally the audiance, Obama continues to feed the masses populist pabulum with a liberal dose of blaming every one else for todays national problems. I think he is a demagogue and he uses his own style of demagoguery in his speech. Not an effective speaker at all...

It never casers to amaze me how people can miss a point by a million miles. Now for the Americans that have commented here and have turned and twisted what was just an example of public speaking and possibly some good tips, drop the emotions and use your brain.

I have been public speaking and conducting training on change management for some time now and the techniques mention are good ones and they work. You MUST always pitch to the audience before you. You will fail if you don?t. Pick up a book, engage the brain and you will see.

Many people have commented very passionately, which is great, but to effectively lead people you must remain calm and present a strong image (not overpowering). You can have passion fir a subject, just remember to stay calm and we all have the right to have our own ideas

Negative comments surrounding 5 ways to speak like Obama article

This is the most ridiculous set of negative comments I have ever read! There are some truly bitter, bitter Americans. This article is not about Obama (...not really, come on!)... It had already been CLEARLY pointed out in the pre text offered above the article. It has also since been addressed by other members above who clearly recognise the point of the article is to offer assistance in the form of helpful advice to those who feel they wish to understand another possible method available to improve their self proclaimed oratory skills when speaking specifically in public namely to audiences and delivering a planned presentation. That's it!! It really is that Simple.... If you find the advice helpful, great... if you don't, well, then we'll all safely assume you already know the advice / method offered here by the Author, we accept that you may have already been there, bought the t-shirt and devoured the pie too - in which case you needn't really comment. Your negative, childish and totally unjustified political views are clearly not shared with the larger proportion of your countrymen nor are they shared with majority of the rest of the world. Your sad opinions are therefore not really being heard or should I say really listened too. Maybe they are not convincing enough and you could actually learn a thing or two from the points offered as advice after all. In fact they are heard far less that those of President Obama and that is why he is in the Presidential status he is in. Get it! He must be doing something right to be there to start with?! So, unless you have something constructive to say to those that enjoyed the article for the purpose it was originally intended - go put your toys back in your Pram and accept that you finally have a highly regarded President which could actually, possibly start to repair the damage caused by your previous Presidents. President Obama's pauses when delivering unplanned comments during a public address are actually quite reassuring as they imply he is thinking before he opens his mouth - something many of you could actually learn from as it implies sincerity.

Congratulations on the article and your willingness to help those who feel they require some assistance and are willing to seek it. I am simply sorry you had many negative individuals who failed to understand the simplicity of your underlying message and felt the need to wail, cry and have an outburst, turning this into a board expressing their obvious disbelief around how someone like President Obama was actually elected in the first place! Boo hoo! At least President Obama does not read books upside down neither does he appear to play golf when a major crisis is happening around the world. He doesn't look cross eyed, sound stupid or degrading. Ultimately people are trying hard to believe there is hope for your country and how this will also affect the rest of the world in terms of peace, prosperity and profitable economies! So, try not to be so much of a 'bah humbug', for it certainly cannot be any worse than what you had running your country!! Enough said...

FYI ? I was merely passing by and will not be returning to review further comments left here. Therefore please note: any childish or clearly stupid retaliations will simply be wasted on me. I know they are likely to happen because most Americans are renowned for not being able to take any form of critiscism. The skill only tends to be demonstrated by the more broad minded amongst you which appears to be on the increase. So, let ME be clear on behalf of most of the planet and your own countrymen... Most of us are neither interested in listening to more of your rubbish nor are we concerned. What will happen will happen - bad or good... It certainly has to be better because it cannot be any worse. Please grow up!

You go President B.Obama! Well done Sims on writing an excellent article for those that need it. Obama's style of presenting clearly does work, it must do, he is the President after all AND has the whole world following him... happy

RE: Five Ways to Speak Like Obama

This was an informative article. People who are blinded by their perceptions tend to go dramatically off topic when asked a question or providing an opinion. The comparisons given in the article were intended to provide examples and not to imply that President Obama was the ultimate example in those areas. Focus on whether or not you think the components were correct and add value as a speaker. Otherwise you only show people what they could never identify without your help...whomever you voted for didn't win. It is amazing how otherwise intelligent people will go off topic to achieve some satisfaction in an area that will neither make our country or themselves any better. It is also amazing that many of these people held the office which they so eagerly criticize in such a high esteem just a few years ago. Great Article BNET!!!! Others stay on topic...and lick your wounds somewhere where people might actually agree with it.....this is not a political view sight....Thank you

Thanks BNETfor your excellent tips on public speaking and for citing President Obama as as example of a speaker who communicates effectively with his audiences. The reponses that were negative reflected the 20% of the audience who are mentally absent during any presentation. Instead of commenting on the article, they pounced on the chance to let off political steam. Come on negative ones, quit whining and hop on board the 21st Century train to progress and creativity; enough already with the sour grapes attitude.

I like Obama,s speech because it is better than his competitor's all combined. To be able to distil the complex issues of state craft into a crytic YES, WE CAN message shows that he was aware that he had no personal abilities beyond the collective resolve of the larger society to solve its own problem. Call him the sacrificial lamb and he fits.

RE: Five Ways to Speak Like Obama

Many people note a significant difference in the quality of President Obama's speech between those occasions when he uses a teleprompter and those when he speaks extemporaneously. They imply that his oratorical gifts are actually not as great as they seem because when he speaks without a teleprompter he says "er and uhm" like the average oratorical duffer, and often pauses awkwardly once he starts a sentence, as he re-thinks how to arrange the thought into words that will not play against him.

Barbara Tuchman, the great American historian, suspected that teleprompters would bring down our democracy. She said, in an interview with Bill Moyers, that the devices were "the most devastating tool that technology's invented..." Our public men, "don't speak spontaneously. You don't hear them meet a situation out of their own minds. They read this thing that's going along there in front of them. Words that have been created for them by PR men or by advertisers or whatever. And this is not the real man that we see. And it allows an inadequate, minor individual to appear to be a statesman, because he's got very good speechwriters. Mr. Reagan. Boy. And to read the stuff off, because he reads it very well. He's an actor, I guess, a trained actor. ... you never know what he's reading. Nor do you really know this with any of them. They learn it very fast...the teleprompter--is a really, in my opinion, it's a terrible tool, because what we have is an artificial result."

Then Bill Moyers says, "And yet George Washington had Alexander Hamilton as a speechwriter (and by the way, Lincoln had William Seward--SW). The Farewell Address, his final major statement as he exited the Presidency, was largely penned by Alexander Hamilton. Is there a correlation?"

And Tuchman says, "No, because the teleprompter shows the person in a situation which is not real, and which is phony, and which is deceptive. The thing is, you see, that we're a public that is brought up on deception, through advertising. From the moment we are children, we learn that some kind of cereal is going to make us strong and win races and one thing and another, and the next thing you know , if you use a particular kind of toothpaste, you're going to marry Gary Cooper, or at least have a glamorous romance somewhere; all that is deception."

    She raises some questions.
    1. Are teleprompters a form of deception?
    2. What's the difference between a teleprompter and a piece of paper with the speech written on it?
    3. Do we want our Presidents to speak without benefit of speech writers, teleprompters, or written notes?
    4. How important is it that our President be a good "talker"--meaning a strong advocate for his ideas and for our country.
    5. What are the skills, attributes, and behaviors of a good talker?

These are questions that are worth answering well.

One more question: What about PowerPoint? Don't most of us use it as a teleprompter to remind us what to say?

I think it's very important that the President be a good speaker. He has to inspire the electorate to get anything done; anyone who denies the power of rhetoric is kidding themselves. One of the reasons George W. Bush was such an ineffective leader was that he was unable to formulate a coherent thought. It made you doubt whether he ever had one.

RE: Five Ways to Speak Like Obama

I think we all can recall speeches that have been from the pits. I remember a graduation speech where a highly successful business executive had 38 "uh's" in a 15-minute speech, or the PowerPoint (teleprompter of choice for business...) that had too much information and way too many slides. --The boredom, the extensive details, the disastrous comment, the joke where nobody laughed: how many ways can you fail at giving a good speech and everybody is watching you wither up on the platform?

The Five Ways to Speak Like Obama (President Obama) is an article on some of the very technical basics of public speaking. We teach and mentor this and more every week at Toastmasters club meetings all over the world.

I find that public speaking is about 20% technical (use of gestures, vocal variety, organization, etc.) and 80% artistic (connecting with your audience, saying something meaningful, etc.). President Obama, even though some argue he is teleprompter-dependent, has mastered these technical and artistic success factors such that he gives a great speech to an audience of multi-millions of people. His style, content and delivery have proven very effective in helping win the Presidency, and the lesson here is to ask how we all might develop our public speaking skills to a similar high level of effectiveness so people will actually listen to what we have to say. (Don't we wish people would listen to us as closely as they listen to the President?)

For those who might like to speak like President Obama, or better yet, who might like to develop their own style and delivery in a supportive, learning environment, why don't you consider joining a local Toastmasters club ( http://www.toastmasters.org/ )? Toastmasters has competitions that go all the way to the international level, and many people join Toastmasters as a step in developing a career in public speaking.

Is it a noble goal for yourself to be able to speak better and more effectively than the President? Think of the impact you would have in getting your message across... as well as maybe making a living at it if you have something heartfelt and worthwhile to say.

Yes . That is what he does unfailingly. We can add consistency everytime and everywhere & backing on foundational & elemental noble principles like unity , love , pride , compassion and valour has been in subtle form , present everytime he stands to speak . I think , clarity about the basic principles resulting in every situation , is one singlemost reason keeps him way ahead of other contemporaries and then the technically articulated actions as mentioned by you , make his speech invincible.

RE: Five Ways to Speak Like Obama

Wasn't this an article about effective public speaking - not speech writing, or public questions and answers, or improvisational speaking, or intent or content, but merely how to *deliver a speech*? Every bit of public speaking I have ever done was prepared and written beforehand and delivered from notes, sometmes with a little help from my friends. The challenge is to capture and hold your audience and to make them hear, make them understand, make them believe, make them passionate, and make them buy your point of view. This article was not about anyone's point of view or politics but instead about one particular example of a very effective method of speaking to your audience. It was a good and helpful article.

For those who don't like pauses - today, note and write down every time you use "um," "er," well," or any other technique used to pause and gather your thoughts. Part of the success of President Obama's speech is that it reflects the way the majority of people actually speak. (President Reagan: "Well......"). And I like a leader who is not afraid to pause and think before he opens his mouth and inserts his foot; i.e., "There's an old saying in Tennessee ? I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee ? that says, fool me once, shame on ? shame on you. Fool me ? you can't get fooled again." ?G.W.Bush, Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002

    Amen!...to old.wheezer in post #28.

I guess I'm surprised--but probably shouldn't be--that SO many people have chosen to use their comments as a political forum, rather than keeping their focus of the contents of the article. Like THAT never happens on any other blogs.

Personally, I did not vote for Obama. But he certainly had/has a charisma and charm that McCain was lacking during the campaigns. And with that he engaged both the American people and the world-at-large at a level that has probably not been seen since JFK. Regardless of his character or what his term in office may bring, we should ALL strive to be as appealing. THAT is what gets attention, makes friends, closes sales, etc.

And being an excellent speaker is one of the ingredients in that formula...

This is an excellent article with great tips. Obama carries himself with confidence and that comes across in his speeches. I wonder how he would come across though (1) without talking points, (2) without speechwriters, and especially (3) without a teleprompter. In all fairness, these should be taken into account in this article.

RE: Five Ways to Speak Like Obama

"Obama is a master at grabbing and keeping his audience?s attention, which is the number one goal of any public speaker"

Actually, I think the number one goal of any public speaker is to convey his/her message. This presupposes that you have something to say.

(Don't get me wrong here, I'm not trying to score political points or say the the current President has no message; I'm trying to make a point about public speaking.)

Technique is only the maidservant of message. If you have something to say it can help an audience to hear it, but it won't make your message any better.

I recall teaching a public speaking class to a group of black South Africans visiting Israel during the dark days of apartheid. One was an imposing Zulu who ran a community theater group. An actor with skill and presence, I asked him (as I asked every member of the class) to speak ex tempore for one minute. With gusto and passion who held the audience's attention. At the end they actually applauded. Then I asked them if they could recall what he'd said. None of them could.

Form is important, but substance is even more important.
