If you've got an idea for improvements within your own company, it's often easy to assume that your boss will hear you out. But there's a right way and a wrong way to sell an idea with an email or internal memo. Below are two examples—one that's likely to bomb, and one that has a good chance of success.     Not just for memos

    This is good advice for more than just memos. You can use this for stating your opinion in meetings, giving presentations, even just conversations with employees.

    The most important point is to state you subject/issue/question up front. This gives your audience a context for the discussion. They are much more likely to then pay attention to your background information.

    It was a wonderful experience reading the two versions. If the first version is read in isolation, one would think "What's wrong with it?" Had there been not the boxes mentioning what was wrong with each section, we would have said, that is the way we normally see. However, the second version, point by point overcomes the shortfalls in the first version and makes the proposal more acceptable. Kudos for the deep insight into the expressions and their hidden meanings.

    You are bang on. Excellent. In the company I work, the executives really want to get to the bare bones early as they have lots to do.

    I agree with Anandateertha's comment that it was helpful to see the 2 different versions. Upon reading the article, I might have to go back to my own blog entries and shake things up a bit.

    That being said, I love Sbaba's short & sassy comment. Bang on...is that a Britishim? Love the colorful language. Makes the comments as interesting as the article!

    Thanks for the great article. As the other comments have pointed out, these same concepts should be used for most verbal and written communications. I especially liked the closing sentences - this will really generate some action.

    Now that's a killer pitch

    It's important to quote other reports and support all your points with research. It's even more important if you can take some of your managers own words and put it in the article. Your manager will be less likely to attack his own words then the words of others.

    Body language and non verbal communication is an important tool for developing interpersonal skills.
    Today a lot of focus on non verbal communication would enable the young towards their personality development.
