Obama v. McCain — Online! | BNET
...But Difficult Ones Inhibit
When a site asks for personal information before a user can post a comment, register, or get information, user participation drops steeply. Although the McCain site prominently places the Volunteer HQ dashboard on every page, supporters must first submit their personal information — e-mail address and Zip code — before they can even read the volunteer options. “Since you have to sign up to find out what’s available, the invitation is just not there,” Mendell says. Asking for personal information forces the user to think about what they’re doing and wonder if getting the information is worth getting on the campaign’s email distribution list.

RE: ...But Limited Options Kill the Potential (Obama v. McCain ? Online!)
Big surprise -- a CBS "analyst" who favors Obama. Are we supposed to take this seriously?

This is a web analysis of how the websites differ (design, content, layout) and whether you like it or not, contains valid points.

Design is everything
In light of Barack's recent victory, one has to ask how big a part the effectiveness of his online channel vs. McCain's had. The design of Obama's site (I'm a McCain supporter btw) clearly surpasses by leaps and bounds McCain's same effort.
Hopefully, this approach to top notch and effective design is seen not only in his campaign strategy, but also echoed in his presidency. -

RE: ...chrismonicabouc
What a totally idiotic comment. To draw a supposedly
political conclusion from what is actually a careful and
certainly very professional analysis of competing
websites just illustrates the paucity of thinking from
what is now thankfully the losing side in this historic
election.
In fact the limited options, confusion and lack of
consistency in McCain's site that BNet's web expert
highlighted serve rather well as an analogy for the
state of the thoroughly defeated Republican party. If
there was ever a case of the creative work embodying
the brand values, here it is... -

RE: Clickoncopy
Actually I thought the comment chrismonicabou was funny using a bit of humor stating a fact that most media outlets CBS being one of them have slanted views toward the left no matter how off topic his comment was.
clickoncopy clearly demonstrates the hate and anger demonstrated so often by dems during this campaign toward republicans or anyone that doesn't agree with them, behavior they should be ashamed of.
But that's neither here nor there as we get back to the point and your focusing on a humorous comment and turning this forum into a political attack is unnecessary.
As for creative work embodying the brand values when referring to the dems, I'd bite my lip on that talking point. True the republicans were really lacking in their marketing and technology use game but in no way does the design of Obama's website dictate or reflect his politics, credibility or integrity.
These sites are setup by creative people paid to create an "image" and clearly the dems had way more money to throw around then the GOP due to obamas first lie of accepting public campaign financing and then going back on his word. Character is measured by ones actions not their words!
Never the less this article is an interesting one and brings up a valid point about any website, it must be clean, easy to navigate and when rich with information must be well organized and structured.
McCains site took effort to find things, Obama's didn't offer so much information in your face instead just showed up front their most important things, Donate, Volunteer and a few quick messages. Remember to follow K.I.S.S. Keep it simple stupid! -

I must say this is good analysis and it certainly gave more insight into website design. Nice.
